PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER'S TIDES
Blu-Ray Review

Reviewed by Rena Hansen

Yes, Captain Jack is back again! You can bring him home to watch over and over again. “Pirates of the Caribbean 4 – On Stranger Tides” has now been released on DVD. Johnny Depp inevitably returns as fancy-dress comedy buccaneer Jack Sparrow for Disney’s fourth installment of this Caribbean adventure which also reunites Geoffrey Rush as the now peg-legged rogue Captain Barbosa. New to this franchise is Edward “Blackbeard” Teach portrayed by Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard’s daughter, and Jack’s old flame Angelica. Unfortunately, the Jack and Angelica relationship doesn’t go anywhere, and had nothing to do with the pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. Yes, the Mermaids were kind of an interesting part to the story since it all goes along with the Pirate folklore but it felt like they were just thrown into the story as filler to bring in yet another romance a cheesy romance between a captured mermaid and a hunky preacher. This whole story just felt like it was written quickly and thrown together so that they could add yet another addition to the never ending saga of Captain Jack Sparrow. To perfectly honest, I found myself dozing off a few times while watching it. This surprised me because this was the first Pirates flick I have ever fallen asleep to. In fact, this was quite disappointing because I am a huge Johnny Depp fan and love him as Captain Jack. However, sadly not even Captain Jack can save this ship.

Extras!
The two-disc combo pack (one Blu-ray, one DVD) contains the following:

"Bloopers of the Caribbean," commentary by director Rob Marshall this feature which I enjoyed. I always love seeing the little mess-ups that occur while shooting a movie.

"LEGO Animated Shorts: Captain Jack's Brick Tales" which is cute if you have little ones, I don’t.

Disney Second Screen functionality if you want to explore extras on a portable device while synced to the movie on your TV screen. Neat extra feature.

The five-disc combo pack (one Blu-ray 3-D, two Blu-rays, one DVD and one digital copy) has all of the previously mentioned features plus "Legends of 'On Stranger Tides,'" "In Search of the Fountain," "Last Sail/First Voyage," "Under the Scene: Bringing the Mermaids to Life" as well as deleted and extended scenes with intros by Marshall. These behind the scenes looks are always a plus to any DVD set.

So, if you are a Pirate and Johnny Depp fan like myself and have the other three movies and despite the fact that this fourth installment severely lacks, then go ahead and add this one to your library…just make sure you dust this one off every so often.
